Sportsoho Triathlon Challenge Race (香港三項鐵人挑戰賽) 2011

What a difference one year of solid training will do! I'm very happy with my overall sprint triathlon. The course is similar to the one last year for two exceptions: rough waters and a stronger me. Unfortunately, I almost DNF because of I lost my goggles when I jumped into the water. Luckily Danny was able to locate them quickly in the choppy sea :). Also, I got donkey kicked about 600m with a bruised eye..

I reviewed my blog from the previous year's similar event, and 11 minutes extra in the water. Yes, I am still considerably slow but much improvement has been made. This includes a 23k bike ride over Tai Po Road before the race started.

But it is not just the swim that I was faster. My bike time increased by over 4 minutes and the run by a whopping 30 seconds per kilometer with a consistent 4:14 average.

I however did get lapped by the stronger athletes, but considering that I've been only doing this for a year. I am happy with my results.

For those who think they could have tried a little harder today. No worries, commitment and desire will prevail!

HKTriA Sprint Triathlon 750/20/5

My First Sprint Triathlon... :)

I started the day really early by waking up at 4:00AM. This wasn't necessary I feel since my race wouldn't start for another 3:45 hours. Since it was my first triathlon, I took several days off without much biking or running. The last two weeks, I pounded the trails and ran up mileage on the bike. My goal was to be fresh and reduce the inflamation that I caused by twisting my left foot twice in a row. I took a cab at 5:15AM to arrive early to get my numbers placed.

The race basically was the same as the Aquathon I did previously the month before with an additional bike run. My swim was better but I seem to go off course a lot which took a lot of time out. One time I thought I was last, but then an official shouted at me stating that I was off course. I was heading for the starting bouy and not the third. Throughout the swim, I was fighting space and continuously hitting a breast stroke swimmer. I'm sure he hated me... Even the end, I went off course and had to swim to the right for about 20m to get on the pier steps. My time in the water stood at 28:43. Next time, I will look up every 6th stroke.
The transition for the swim2bike was very long. You had to run to your bike which seemed more than 100m. I used rubber bands for the shoes, but my right shoe hit the ground and came off before I mounted the bike. So, I had to retrace my steps with the bike and pick up my shoe and put it on.

The bike required 5 laps and the fast cyclists passed me twice. Although, I felt I trained sufficiently for my first triathlon, I obviously see that I can improve in all areas. My time on the bike were very inconsistent and I felt sluggish as well. I took a gel while in the transition and drank fluid right after the corner.

Splash ‘n Dash Aquathon Series – Race 2

This race is my first ever duathlon. I had butterflies the week of the race thinking about swimming 1500m since my swim is a little better than doggy paddling. I spent the prior weekends with a buddy of mine in open water off Gold Coast near Tuen Mun. At the race, I didn't realize they changed the course and it would be 3 laps.. I was focused on finishing 2 since this was the instructions I read on the internet; only to find out that it was changed at the last moment to 3 laps.

My swim consisted of 28 minutes for 750m. I believe I got lapped since the fastest guy finished the race in a little less an hour. I saw him before and he is a 30ish min 10k runner.

Because everyone wears the same cap, I wasn't disqualified but I will know that it will take me around 45 minutes for 1500m until I speed up with daily training in the pool

HKMP 4X Country + Road Race [0:47:35]

The 4th Shatin Mixed Terrain Race was held on Apr 25 (Sun) starting at 8:30am at the Siu Lek Yuen Village Car Park; distance is around 9km.

First and foremost: This race puts me over 1,007km since I started keeping stats.

Garmin Full Stats; Official Results

KmSplit min/km  min/mile +Elevation -Elevation
1            0:04:52 7:51         216                 0
At the starting line, all you could see was a big steep hilly road. Well, luckily the weather was great and cool especially for Hong Kong. I have to tell you I was surprised how fast the runners went out because I myself was under 5 minutes for around 100m elevation. I know the elevation say 216; but I don't believe it. I looked at google map and believe that more.

2            0:06:34 10:35       246                 0
This was all steps going up and up and up. I don't really like to stop running and walk; but this race is a must. You wonder if you are in shape? Well, try this course and you'll realize what your body can handle. For me, I thought the 2 peak hike/run last 2 weekends were enough. I was wrong!

3            0:09:05 14:38       271            -201
This path turned technically difficult because now it's not steps but you are running half of it downhill like leapfrog. I remember parts of it being dirt trails; flashback 20years when I did cross country.

4            0:05:11 8:20            0             -302
All down hill on road. Picking up speed...
5            0:03:44 6:00            0             -206
Unbelievable? I thought I could only do this on a flat first 1k. Thank you gravity!

6            0:04:17 6:54          12             -144
7            0:04:16 6:53          42             -18
8            0:04:22 7:02           7                0
9            0:04:20 6:58         42               -41
10          0:00:50 6:23           0               -12
The rest of the race was all flat; similar to Tolo 5k. I was happy with this pace especially after the brutal first 3k, but some girl just whizzed me by 200m ;( before the end. Good for her!

Summary 0:47:36 8:19 836 925
If you are planning to run or hike the Oxfam Trailwalker in November, Moontrekker in October, or Lantau 2 Peaks 20k race in October; then this race was a little taste of hill race running/hiking/walking.
